In the heart of rainy Manchester in 1938, just a year after Baracuta's inception, the legendary G9 Harrington Jacket was born. Today, 85 years later, this timeless piece of British fashion history stands as an enduring symbol of style and authenticity. To commemorate this remarkable journey, Baracuta embarked on a journey back to its roots in Manchester, capturing the essence of what the G9 represents to people of all backgrounds and generations. The result is a groundbreaking narrative that weaves together 13 captivating stories from diverse British individuals, which will be unveiled every week, with each sharing their deep emotional connections with the Original Harrington Jacket.
Over its 85-year history, the G9 Harrington Jacket has been embraced by a plethora of subcultures, from the Mods and punks to the skinheads and ska fans. Across the Atlantic, it found a place in the hearts of Hollywood's biggest stars and Ivy League enthusiasts, transforming it into a preppy essential.
Originally designed for Manchester's golfers by Baracuta founders John and Isaac Miller, the G9's distinctive features, such as the umbrella back yoke, the dog ear collar, and the iconic Fraser tartan lining, have elevated it to iconic status in British fashion. Even its name pays homage to the sport, with 'G' representing golf and '9' symbolising the number of holes on a golf course.
The G9's journey didn't stop at the golf course. It quickly captured the attention of Hollywood and became a staple in the wardrobes of some of the industry's most iconic stars. From Elvis in King Creole to Frank Sinatra in Assault on a Queen, and Steve McQueen in The Thomas Crown Affair, the G9 transcended the silver screen.
Closer to its Manchester home, the G9 embarked on another subcultural adventure, becoming a beloved piece for bands and musicians like The Clash, Paul Weller, and Eric Clapton. Even during the Britpop era, frontmen Liam Gallagher and Damon Albarn proudly donned their Harringtons.
Despite the evolving fashion landscape, the G9 Harrington Jacket has remained a constant. Its design has stood the test of time, preserving the values of authenticity and trustworthiness. Crafted in the historic Baracuta Cloth fabric, the G9 – made in this fabric - is still proudly manufactured in the UK, maintaining its focus on high-quality materials and craftsmanship.
In celebration of the G9's 85th anniversary, Baracuta has gathered an array of modern-day Manchester icons to share their personal connections to the jacket.
